Hub Nut Design/Fabrication

This Hub Nut was machined from a 1/2" x 3" x 3" block of 6061 Aluminium.  The design was created to hold an omni-directional wheel to a motor shaft.  The piece was milled to bolt into the wheel and had a back recess to sleeve around the bore.  The end of the motor shaft was threaded and so the design was made to have a tapped hole that could thread on to the motor shaft.  This then was locked on with another thin profile nut.   This project was designed by myself and co-machined with Brian Gonner.
Rotisserie set up on Mill for Hub Nut Machining.

Feed rate and bit speed were the main challenge with this set up.  The rotisserie was difficult to spin at a rate that would be the most appropriate for milling the piece.  We made sure to climb cut our final passes to ensure a nice polished finish.
